Intercepting embankment
Last updated: 2023-09-06
Description
The intercepting embankment subassembly models an intercepting embankment and optional ditch behind the embankment per Wisconsin DOT standard detail drawing 8E5-2.
Behavior
This subassembly inserts links that model an intercepting embankment with optional ditch behind. The insertion of the upward link of the embankment (link 1) begins at the attachment point, unless the Distance from Attachment Point parameter is greater then 0, in which case the insertion begins at the intersection with the Daylight Surface at the location indicated. The offset of the end point of the downward link (link 2) is determined by adding the Total Embankment Width to the insertion point location of Link 1.The elevation of the end point of link two is on the Daylight Surface. The end point of Link 1, which is also the start point of Link 2, is determined by projecting the Link 1 Embankment Slope upward from the insertion point of Link 1 and the Link 2 Embankment Slope upward from the end point of Link 2 to the point of intersection.
Steep conditions on the Daylight surface could result in a situation in which it is impossible to locate an intersection of Link1 and Link2 slopes given the slopes and widths that are input. In these cases the subassembly will create no points or links at that station and a message will be displayed in the Event Viewer and written to a log file.
If a ditch width is defined, the ditch link is inserted starting from the end point of Link 2 of the Embankment downward using slope and width defined. If the end point of the ditch link is located above the daylight surface the subassembly will not create ditch points or links at that station and a message will be displayed in the Event Viewer and written to a log file.
The final daylight link is then inserted upward at the slope defined, to its intersection with the Daylight Surface.
Attachment & layout mode operation
The attachment point is at the Daylight_Cut or Daylight_Fill point. Can be inserted on either the right or left side.
In layout mode the subassembly displays the embankment links with slopes defined, using a width of 5 feet for Link 1 and 5 feet for Link 2.Link 2 is terminated with an arrowhead pointing outwards. The ditch link, where applicable, is shown using width and slope defined, followed by the daylight link extending upward at the slope defined for a distance of 10 feet. The daylight link is terminated with an arrowhead pointing outwards.
Input parameters
Note: All dimensions are in feet unless otherwise noted. All slopes are in run-over-rise form (for example, 4:1) unless indicated as a percent slope with a "%" sign.

Target parameters
This section lists the parameters in this subassembly that can be mapped to one or more target objects, such as a surface, alignment, or profile object in a drawing.
Parameter | Description | Status |
---|---|---|
Daylight Surface | Name of the daylighting surface. The following object types can be used as targets for specifying this surface: surfaces. | Required |
Attachment Point Offset | Object used to define the offset location of the beginning point of Embankment Link 1. The following objects can be used as targets for specifying this location: alignments, polylines, feature lines, or survey figures. | Optional |
Intercepting Embankment Endpoint Offset | Object used to define the offset location of the end point of Embankment Link 2. This offset must be outside the attachment point location. The following objects can be used as targets for specifying this offset: alignments, polylines, feature lines, or survey figures. | Optional |
Ditch Bottom Offset | Object used to define the offset location of the bottom of the ditch behind the intercepting embankment. This offset location must be outside the intercepting embankment endpoint location. The following objects can be used as targets for specifying this offset: alignments, polylines, feature lines, or survey figures. | Optional |
Daylight Link Offset | Object used to define the offset location of the end point of the daylight link. This offset must be outside the location of the ditch bottom. Ditch width must be defined, either with a fixed value or a target for the Daylight Link Offset target to be used. The following objects can be used as targets for specifying this offset: alignments, polylines, feature lines, or survey figures. | Optional |
