Xref tools - Assign Xref to Layer
Last updated: 2023-05-03
Overview
When using the native External Reference (Xref) Insert tool in Civil 3D, the Xref is place on the active layer at the time of the insertion. Assign Xrefs to Layers is a tool that creates a custom layer for an Xref and places the Xref on that layer. The layer is automatically generated and locked. The automatic layer naming convention is "Xref-filename" where "filename" is the filename excluding the ".dwg" suffix.
Info: By default, AutoCAD fades the display of entities on locked layers in model space and paper space. This does not affect how these entities are plotted. To change the locked layer fade level, use the LAYLOCKFADECTL system variable.
Using tool
WisDOT [***] tab > Manage panel > Xref Tools dropdown > Assign Xref to Layer
The command can also be loaded from the command line: DOTASSIGNXREFSTOLAYERS.
This tool automatically puts ALL Xrefs on their own individual layers, following the naming convention described above.
