WisDOT textstyles
Last updated: 2021-11-05
Overview
The WisDOT Civil 3D standards require custom AutoCAD textstyles. WisDOT custom textstyles reside in textstyle component files that are included in the WisDOT Civil 3D resource files. WisDOT custom textstyles use TrueType (.TTF) fonts for compatibility. TrueType fonts have long been the most common format for fonts on Windows operating systems and are also supported by most desktop and mobile browsers.
Warning: Altering WisDOT component files and directories may result in lost functionality. Contact CAE Support for more information.
When starting a project from a WisDOT template, the WisDOT templates are purged of all WisDOT standards components except those necessary for WisDOT Civil 3D Styles. To add all WisDOT standards components groups at once (symbol blocks, dimension styles, layers, linetypes, multileaders, and textstyles) use Add All Components. Each WisDOT standards component group can also be added individually to a drawing.
User component files can be created and stored in C:\WisDOT\Stnd\users\Myc3d20xx\
New custom textstyle requests can be directed to the WisDOT Civil 3D Futures Trello board for review and consideration.
Resource files
Textstyle component files
The WisDOT textstyle component files consist of an AutoCAD drawing and SHX AutoCAD font files. The files are located in: C:\WisDOT\Stnd\C3D20xx\Components\Fonts\. The WisDOT textstyles also use six different Microsoft TrueType fonts, which are located in C:\Windows\Fonts.
- Textstyles.dwg is a drawing displaying all the WisDOT custom textstyles in model space at the WisDOT CAD standards sizes.
- Current textstyles use Microsoft TrueType fonts: ariblk.ttf, ARIALN.TTF, ARIALNB.TTF, arial.ttf, calibril.ttf, and calibri.ttf.
-
Legacy textstyles use AutoCAD SHX fonts: dot_font5.shx, dot_font5.shx, dot_font5.shx, and dot_font5.shx. These SHX fonts are included only for compatibility with legacy WisDOT drawings and should not be used in new WisDOT drawings.
Info: Microsoft TrueType fonts are included in a standard Windows OS installation and are not distributed with the WisDOT Civil 3D resource files due to licensing restrictions.
Textstyle list
Specific WisDOT custom textstyle use cases can be found in the Plan production section of the C3DKB.

All WisDOT custom textstyles are annotative with a paper text height setting of 0.0000. The current textstyle and height can be set by using the Set WisDOT Textstyle/Size tool. To create sheets using typical WisDOT plan production tools it is unnecessary to develop any other textstyles.
The two AutoCAD textstyles (Legend and Standard) are default textstyles used in the Basic and Standard Civil 3D Styles settings. These textstyles exist in the WisDOT drawing templates for DWG compatibility and are not typically used for WisDOT plan production.
Using textstyles
The available textstyles in an active DWG can be found at:
-
Ribbon > Annotate tab > Text panel > Text Style dropdown
To add all the WisDOT custom textstyles styles to a drawing as a group, use the Textstyles Add component group command.
WisDOT custom textstyles and sizes can be added to a drawing individually from the tools in the Annotation palette group.
