Mapping & Survey data workflow

Last updated: 2024-05-10

Overview

The linked PDF above shows the relationship between mapping & survey source files, standard base data files, and design & plan sheets. Updates and/or edits to any existing condition data should done through the same workflows so that design and plan sheet files automatically see the changes.

It is strongly recommended that management of existing condition data be handled by people with appropriate skills and knowledge for the tasks.

Requirement: For in-house WisDOT projects, Survey data coordinators are responsible for managing the set of existing condition files for a Civil 3D project. No one else should create/update/delete these files.

Tip: It is recommended to have wisdot-c3d14-survey-data-flow.pdf open to help understand the following details.

  1. For a typical Civil 3D project, all existing condition files are located in the <Project ID>\base folder.
  2. Deliverable files accessed by design and sheet files are at the top level. They are:
    1. Srfc-Ex.dwg existing surface
    2. Srvy-Cntrl.dwg construction survey control
    3. Topo-Ex.dwg topography features
    4. Uti-Ex.dwg utility features

These files are documented in https://wisconsindot.gov/rdwy/fdm/fd-15-05-att.pdf#fd15-5a3.1

  3. Source files from different collection methods (field survey, mapping flights, lidar) that reference into the deliverable files are stored in subfolders under base
  4. Field survey data must be kept in a survey database and be connected to various deliverable files for survey codes to be processed correctly into correct layer, block, and linetype information.
  5. Surface data must be merged together at the same accuracy level and then a complete existing ground surface can be made by pasting the surfaces from different collection accuracies together. This is done by starting with the surface with the largest footprint and pasting smaller surfaces inside of it.
  6. The intent of all workflows in Survey is that once a file is created, edits and updates flow through the same deliverable files so that design and sheet files that reference them see the updates automatically.
